Existen diferentes maneras para expresar la idea de llegar a tiempo en inglés. Aquí ofrecemos algunas posibles traducciones junto con un puñado de expresiones que también pueden resultar útiles.
Arrive on time: ‘Llegar a tiempo’ a un lugar. Por ejemplo: “$9 fee for taxi to arrive on time” (tarifa de $9 para que el taxi llegue a tiempo)
Be on time: ‘Llegar a tiempo’, en el sentido de ser puntual, por ejemplo: “Why is it important to be on time for a job?” (¿por qué es importante llegar a tiempo al trabajo?).
Get on time: ‘Llegar a tiempo’, ya sea a un lugar determinado, ya sea a hacer algo que uno se había propuesto. Por ejemplo: “How to get to class on time” (cómo llegar a tiempo a clase).
In good time: ‘a tiempo’, antes de lo debido, rápido, en un período razonable de tiempo.
Make it on time: ‘Llegar a tiempo’, no necesariamente llegar a un lugar sino a hacer algo. Por ejemplo: “I can’t make it on time” (no puedo llegar a tiempo).
On time vs. In time
Existe una diferencia sutil de significado entre ambas. Mientras que on time hace referencia a ser puntual, no implica urgencia y suele usarse para describir patrones de comportamiento, por ejemplo: “I always reach school on time” (siempre llego puntual a clase), in time significa ‘no tarde’, antes de que el tiempo se agote, implica cierta urgencia. Por ejemplo: “I arrived in time to match the train” (llegué a tiempo a tomar el tren).
Otras expresiones útiles
Be punctual: ‘Ser puntual’, utilizado en el sentido de hábito, alguien que siempre llega a tiempo. Por ejemplo: “How to be punctual” (cómo ser puntual).
Deadline: ‘Fecha tope’ o ‘fecha límite’. El momento en que vence un plazo de tiempo. Por ejemplo: “When’s the deadline for registration?” (¿cuál es la fecha límite para el registro?).
In the nick of time: ‘con el tiempo justo’, con el mínimo plazo para cumplir algo. Por ejemplo: “The beautiful woman was saved just in the nick of time as some man untied her from the train tracks.” (la bella dama fue salvada con el tiempo justo porque un hombre la desató de las vías del tren).
Just in time: ‘Justo a tiempo’, es decir, en el momento preciso en el que se debía llegar a algo. Por ejemplo: “Just in time for Valentine’s Day” (justo a tiempo para el Día de San Valentín).
On the dot: Exactamente a esa hora. Por ejemplo: “You’ve got to be here at 9 on the dot or we won’t make the train” (debes estar aquí exactamente a las 9 o perderemos el tren).
Running out of time: ‘El tiempo se está agotando’, dicho cuando peligra la posibilidad de cumplir determinado plazo. Por ejemplo: “Prince Charles: I’m running out of time” (Príncipe Carlos: mi tiempo se agota).
